Lander Barton from Brighton High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. After high school, Barton joined Utah after being heavily recruited.In 2022 as a freshman Barton saw action in 13 games and played a total of 394 snaps at linebacker for the Utes. He recorded 24 tackles, 5 assists, while adding 16 stops. In coverage Barton notched up no pass breakups, no interceptions, and QB rating when targetted of 93.5. As a pass rusher, he added 14 total pressures, which included 7 QB hurries, 2 QB hits, and 5 sacks on the season.
As a sophomore for the Utes in 2023 Barton played in 7 games and took part in 403 snaps for the Utes. He recorded 20 tackles, 12 assists, while adding 13 stops. Scouting Report: Strengths
- Has the dynamic athleticism to be a force on the edge. He’s a fluid mover with bend-and-dip flexibility as a pass rusher, and Barton uses his long arms to ward off blockers.
- A bit stiff but makes the clean open-field tackle. Good effort in pursuit.
- Barton has an explosive first step and has the fluidity, flexibility and core strength to chase through traffic and make plays.
- Barton takes proper angles and shows impressive closing speed. He’s also outstanding in space and is one of the best coverage guys in this class.
- Looks the part. Good height and a thick, muscular build. Long arms. Good overall athleticism and straight-line speed.
- Greet feel in coverage. Often arrives at the receiver at the same time as the ball, giving up few yards after the catch. Possesses straight-line speed to stay with or chase down receivers in man.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Possesses below-average instincts for the linebacker position. Leaves more plays on the field than Barton makes.
- Locates the ball but takes circuitous routes to go get to it. Should use power and long arms to take on and disengage from blocks. Inefficient with his angles.
- His lateral agility and burst often put him in position to make big plays, but he takes questionable routes to the ball and struggles to avoid blockers when in pursuit.
