Draft Profile: Bio
Conner Weigman was a standout athlete from Bridgeland High School in Texas, earning a 4-star rating from ESPN and a 5-star grade from 247 Sports. He led his high school team to multiple playoff appearances, throwing for 8,901 yards and 98 touchdowns, and rushing for 2,064 yards and 25 touchdowns over his high school career. As a junior and senior, Weigman was named the Houston Touchdown Club Offensive Player of the Year and District 16-6A Offensive MVP. Additionally, he was a two-sport athlete, excelling in both football and baseball.
Initially committing to Texas A&M to play both sports, Weigman chose to focus on football after enrolling early in the spring of 2022. As a freshman, he played in 5 games, passing for 896 yards, 8 touchdowns, and no interceptions, while also rushing for 149 yards. As a sophomore, he started 4 games before a foot injury ended his season. Before his injury, he threw for 979 yards and 8 touchdowns, completing nearly 70% of his passes.
Despite his injury, he earned recognition, including being named an ESPN Freshman All-American in 2022. His ability to bounce back from injury and adapt to new coaching staff changes will be key as he looks forward to continuing his college career and preparing for the NFL Draft.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Displays good zip and ball placement on quick slants and intermediate routes.
- Can effectively attack defenses vertically and horizontally with accurate deep throws.
- Possesses the arm strength to make all requisite NFL throws, including the deep out.
- Quick release with good accuracy on the move, capable of adjusting to pressure.
- Strong pocket presence with the ability to sense and evade pressure efficiently.
- High-level athlete with good speed and agility, making him a dual-threat quarterback.
- Exhibits natural throwing mechanics and accuracy, aided by his baseball background.
- Confident passer with the ability to make plays under pressure and deliver in tight windows.
- Equally able to play in the shotgun or under center
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Mechanics can be inconsistent, leading to sporadic accuracy and off-target throws.
- Has developed some odd Footwork issues (probably as a result of his baseball background), including a wide base, which can negatively impact his throwing mechanics.
- Tends to drift into pressure and can struggle with interior rushers.
- Inconsistent touch on deep throws, sometimes putting too much air under the ball.
- Limited experience with multi-progression reads and can be hesitant on tight-window throws.
Scouting Report: Summary
Conner Weigman has the arm talent and athleticism that NFL teams look for in a franchise quarterback. His ability to make all the throws, coupled with his mobility, makes him a dual-threat in and out of the pocket. Weigman’s quick release and accuracy on the move are major assets, providing him with the tools to extend plays and attack defenses at multiple levels.Despite his high ceiling, Weigman’s game has areas that need refinement. His inconsistent mechanics can lead to erratic ball placement, particularly under duress. Footwork issues and a tendency to rely on his arm talent can result in risky throws and turnovers. Additionally, his limited experience with multi-progression reads raises concerns about his ability to adapt to complex NFL defenses.
Weigman’s potential is undeniable, but he needs a strong, injury-free season to elevate his draft stock. If he can iron out his mechanical flaws and gain more experience reading defenses, he has the upside to develop into a starting quarterback at the next level. With pro teams now having a new respect for signal callers with baseball backgrounds, NFL scouts will be closely monitoring his progress, as his blend of physical tools and playmaking ability makes him a high-upside prospect.
