Draft Profile: Bio

Garrett Nussmeier, hailing from Lake Charles, Louisiana, emerged as a four-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class. Ranked as the 14th-best quarterback in the country and the 84th overall player by 247Sports’ Composite rankings, Nussmeier has completed 129 of 219 career passes for 1,720 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions while serving primarily as a backup at LSU. His high school career at Marcus High in Flower Mound, Texas, included over 8,000 passing yards and 83 touchdowns.

Nussmeier's college highlights include a record-setting performance in the 2022 SEC Championship game, where he passed for 294 yards and two touchdowns in one half against Georgia. In the 2023 ReliaQuest Bowl, he led LSU to a 35-31 comeback victory over Wisconsin, completing 31 of 45 passes for 395 yards and three touchdowns, earning the game's Most Valuable Player award. Over three seasons, he has demonstrated his ability to step up in crucial moments and perform under pressure.

Academically, Nussmeier has been recognized on the SEC Academic Honor Roll in both 2021 and 2022. He has also shown leadership and dedication on the field, consistently preparing as if he were the starter despite playing behind Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. Now, entering his fourth season, Nussmeier takes on the role of starting quarterback for LSU for the first time in his career, poised to lead the team in the upcoming season.

Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Excellent ball placement on short and intermediate throws, leading receivers to potential yardage after the catch.
  • Can make quick decisions and deliver passes under pressure.
  • Has a gunslinger mentality with the confidence to attempt difficult throws.
  • Effective in making off-platform throws with good accuracy.
  • Shows good mobility and ability to extend plays with his feet.
  • Possesses strong vision and balance as a runner, able to gain positive yardage when scrambling.
  • Displays good leadership and preparation, earning the respect of teammates and coaches.
  • Capable of making accurate deep throws when necessary, showing potential to improve further.
  • Strong football lineage, his father Doug Nussmeier, is a former NFL quarterback and current quarterbacks coach for the Chargers
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Occasionally takes unnecessary chances with his throws, leading to turnovers.
  • Needs to improve consistency to shed the "gunslinger" label and become more efficient.
  • Limited physical ceiling, with average frame and potential concerns about durability.
  • Not much of a threat to run compared to more athletic quarterbacks.
  • Requires refinement in delivery mechanics to speed up his release.
Scouting Report: Summary

Garrett Nussmeier exhibits impressive arm talent and poise in high-pressure situations. His ability to deliver accurate throws from a clean pocket and make quick reads under duress is a testament to his readiness for the next level. As he steps into the starting role at LSU, one of the best teams in college football, scouts will be keen to see if he can sustain and build on his performance against top-tier defenses with a full year as a starter.

Nussmeier's gunslinger mentality, while exciting, sometimes leads to high-risk decisions and turnovers. To maximize his potential, he needs to improve his consistency and refine his mechanics, particularly his delivery. His pocket presence is strong, but his lack of elite mobility limits his ability to extend plays outside the pocket, making him reliant on his O-line to maintain a clean pocket.

In the NFL, Nussmeier projects as a prospect with the upside to become a starting-caliber quarterback. His leadership and preparation habits are standout traits, giving him a strong foundation to build upon. 2024 will be massive for Nussmeier if he puts up great numbers and ends up in Heisman contention he'll be a first-day pick, if he underwhelms he's likely to wind up a mid-to-late-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
