Draft Profile: Bio
Donovan Smith from Frenship High School was rated a 3-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 3-star grade by 247 Sports. After high school, Smith opted to join Texas Tech.

In 2021 as a freshman Smith saw action in 6 games for the Red Raiders as he threw for 1177 yards on 140 attempts with a completion percent of 60.7 for an average of 8.4 yards per pass, with only 7 TDs, while taking 9 sacks, and QB rating of 98.4. He added 48 runs for a total of 222 yards at an average of 4.6 per run.

In 2022 as a sophomore he played in 10 games as he passed for 1506 yards on 222 attempts with a completion percent of 65.8 for an average of 6.8 yards per pass, with 12 TDs, while also taking 18 sacks, and putting up QB rating of 88.2. He made 60 runs for a total of 215 yards at an average of 3.6 per rush.

After season's end Smith transferred to Houston where as a junior in 2023 Smith played a total of 12 games. He passed for 2801 yards on 399 attempts and put up a completion percentage of 64.2 for an average of 7.0 yards per attempt, with 22 TDs, and allowing 26 sacks, with QB rating on the year of 89.6. Scouting Report: Strengths
  • From a physical standpoint, a prototypical modern quarterback.
  • Flashes good accuracy to all levels of the field and has the arm strength to make every requisite NFL throw.
  • Athletic build with plenty of room for another 10-15 pounds of muscle mass. Mobile quarterback who can buy time in the pocket and is a threat to gain yards with his feet.
  • Excellent height to see over the defense.
  • Prototypical height for the position with the frame to easily add another 15 pounds of muscle mass without a significant loss in quickness.
  • Smith must be accounted for when used in the read-option game.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Smith is slight of frame, which is problematic for a dual-threat quarterback. Smith has marginal height for the pocket, and there’s not much room to add weight (NFL physicality will be an issue, especially if he’s going to use his legs on a consistent basis).
  • His arm is good but not great, and Smith loses accuracy and velocity when he is moved off his spot.
  • He’s more comfortable throwing deep outside the numbers than working the middle of the field.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
